Maybe you should just do what it seems you want to and. Hope this helps, good luck and never give up. Once you feel like you have mastered these ones you can try to find something a bit more advanced, but not so advanced that you can't keep up. Some easy songs that you can use to learn are "Johnny Cash - I walk the line" or "Seven Nation Army" (Most parts are the same during the entire song in both of them). It almost becomes adicting after a while. It's like a mix between Tabs and Guitar Hero, while still using that arcade-theme. Most of the times when you are trying to find a song, you can just search on youtube for the song + Rocksmith at the end and you will find it. One thing that has taught many people trying to learn bass is a video game called Rocksmith. Most times, playing your favorite songs helps you stay motivated at becoming a better bassist. What type of music do you like to listen to? Try finding some of your favorite songs and maybe practice them. It's never too late to start playing any instrument. You still may not get the language but you'll have the harmony in your finger tips which is what really matters. By going rouge you'll end up teaching yourself what your instructor is trying to teach you through theory. Try to approach the songs you like with the intention of either learning them how they're written, or, crafting your own bass lines. Lastly, I'd try learning on your own a little bit. It's just a translation of the language that is music. You can execute a song without knowing a lick of theory because it's just a tool to describe how a song is made. ![]() Theory is a wonderful tool that helps musicians communicate ideas using agreeable terminology, it's not God. The next thing I would try is cut the theory. The lesson plan can be changed (and should be) to accommodate where you want to go as a musician. The first thing I would try is communicate to your teacher exactly what you just told us. Music is great because there is no rule that says you have to do it any one way. It's not an inability to learn, it's a disconnect between what you want and what you're being taught. I'm 32 now, maybe it's too late for me? Any tip? I just want to have fun playing some basslines and I’m not having it at all with the process. I just want to play along with some (easy) songs, I don’t want to play with someone else, gig, compose, solo or anything else fancy. I’ve been practicing the C scale and the same ¿riffs?/parts (intro for Come As You Are, intro Enter Sandman, some Paranoid, Feel Good Inc, second part of The Chain) and I can’t even play any song… it’s getting frustrating, boring and it's becoming a chore just to try to improve. Then I forget where those notes are and look for some tabs, the tabs don’t look like anything close to my annotations and then my head just explodes… Not the notes, not the tabs, just like: || Em | % | D || My teacher insisted on learning some music theory (scales and modes) and bombarded me with a lot of songs, but written with just the harmony (which I still don’t fully understand). So I did and started on last September, I even try to pick it at least 15-30mins everyday. My GF is a multi-instrumental musician, specially saxophone and trumpet, so she noticed it and recommended me to pick a bass and take classes. I always liked how the bass sounds: raw, meaty, powerful and somehow some of my favorites songs have very strong bass presence. I tried to learn guitar when I was 15 but I failed, even sold it. I listen to it everyday for a great amount of time. Music have always been in/around my life, it’s very important to me. Similarly, please send any comments or critiques to the moderators.
